It is with regret that we report that a man who was stabbed in the neck with a bottle at a central London nightclub at a BBM Party has died.
Phillip Sherriff, 37, a married father-of-two, died in hospital on Sunday following the attack at the Pulse nightclub in Southwark, central London, in the early hours of Wednesday.
He underwent an operation to remove pressure from an injury on his brain several days ago.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the man was “from the Preston area” but would not give further details.
Mr Sherriff had been invited to the function, held to promote BlackBerry’s instant messaging service on Tuesday night, along with celebrities including rapper Wretch 32, stars of The Only Way Is Essex, competition winners and journalists.
Brit award-winning singer Jessie J had been performing at the party before the bloody brawl sent her condolences to Mr Sherriff’s family on Sunday.
She posted on social networking site Twitter:
“I am lost for words. All I can say is my thoughts, love and respects are with the family and children of the man who attended the BlackBerry gig last week who sadly lost his life this morning.”
Ashley Charles, 25, of Leicester, appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court on Saturday morning accused of using a smashed bottle to attack the man.
The defendant, who spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth, was ordered to attend Inner London Crown Court on Friday, April 20. An application for bail was refused.
An inquest is yet to be held into the death.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said:
A murder investigation has been launched after the victim of a nightclub attack died this morning in hospital. A post mortem will be arranged in due course. Next of kin are aware.
The party had been arranged and hosted by Research in Motion to promote their BlackBerry Messenger service.
Police are now treating the case as a murder investigation.
