BlackBerry will hold a press conference Tuesday in Seoul, South Korea, launching its first Android smartphone, the BlackBerry Priv.
Earlier in the month a company spokesperson had stated that the company currently had “no plans to set up a regional office in South Korea”.
However, at tomorrow’s event, the company will also be unveiling their future operations in the Korean market.
This will be BlackBerry’s first phone launched in Korea since pulling out of the local market three years ago and the choice of the outdate Priv is a surprise, as many would have expected the company to launch the DTEK50 in the country, opposed to the more expensive Priv.
A South Korean market watcher commented:
“It is hard to predict how many units BlackBerry will be able to sell here as the firm traditionally targets a small group of its loyal fans in the global market,â€Â
“… the marketing strategy will play a vital role in the uphill battle against bigger local players LG and Samsung”
The price range is expected to fall between 700,000 and 800,000 won.
