Marty Beard quits BlackBerry for personal reasons

BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer Marty Beard has reportedly resigned from the company, in order to deal with a family health issue, a person familiar with the plans told Reuters on Friday.

Beard, whose departure was disclosed to BlackBerry staff in an internal company memo on Friday, does not intend to look for another job, said the person who did not want to be identified because the matter is private.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Beard will leave the company effective December 1.

Beard was Chief Operating Officer at BlackBerry, responsible for leading cross-functional operations, including Marketing, Strategic and Application Partnering, Pricing, Corporate Support and Quality, eCommerce Sales and Security Evangelism.

He previously served as Chairman and CEO of LiveOps, a software and services provider of cloud applications for customer service. He was also President of Sybase 365, a mobile messaging and mobile commerce unit of Sybase, Inc., and Vice President for eCommerce at Oracle Corp.

He has a B.A. from UC Berkeley and an MBA from Georgetown University.

Representatives with BlackBerry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the departure.
