OnStar updates RemoteLink app bringing new interface and features

General Motors’ has announced a fresh update for its RemoteLink mobile application, bringing a new interface and more functionality.

Keeping pace with the mobile trend, the RemoteLink app now features a simpler user interface with a cleaner design. But more than just a pretty new face, the updated app boasts several new features.

Owners of OnStar-equipped vehicle will now be able to access their account details right on their mobile phones. Previously, owners had to call or check those details though OnStar.com.

Additionally, owners with OnStar’s new 4G LTE connectivity can now check data usage and also view how much data is left of their plan. A new function for managing a vehicle’s Wi-Fi hotspot is also included in the app update.

OnStar’s RemoteLink app is gaining in popularity, with a record-setting 7 million users taking advantage of the system in December 2014. RemoteLink’s most used services include remote vehicle start, remote vehicle lock/unlock and a parking feature that pinpoints just where you left your vehicle.

The remote features of the app, ability to remotely start/stop an engine with factory-installed remote start, lock and unlock automatic door locks and activate the horn and lights, are included with no subscription cost for five years from delivery on 2014 MY and newer GM vehicles.

The ability to manage the vehicle’s Wi-Fi hotspot is also included for five years on properly equipped 2015 MY and newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles. All other RemoteLink features require a paid OnStar subscription.

“RemoteLink use has been steadily increasing over the past year, as our customers realize the advantages of a remote connection to their vehicle,” said Dan Kinney, director, User Experience, Global Connected Customer Experience, General Motors.

“Whether they’re warming their car up, cooling it down or checking vehicle information, the app has many practical uses.”

The RemoteLink update is now available for Android and iOS users. Updates for both the BlackBerry and Windows apps will be available in a few weeks.
