BlackBerry Secure Work Space users should not upgrade to iOS 9.3

Apple are expected to officially release iOS 9.3 next week.  iOS 9.3 is currently in it’s seventh beta and the official release will not be compatible with BlackBerry Secure Work Space at the time of it’s release.

Apple has introduced changes in iOS 9.3 that require BlackBerry to update the Secure Work Space security model and corresponding Secure Work Space apps. These changes require Secure Work Space to leverage iOS encryption which is enabled only if a device passcode exists. For that reason, Secure Work Space users should not upgrade their devices to iOS 9.3 until BlackBerry release updated versions of the Secure Work Space apps.

iOS 9.3 requires Secure Work Space to leverage iOS encryption which is only enabled if a device passcode exists. As a result of this change, if devices do not have a passcode, the Secure Work Space apps will not work.

Users must ensure that all iOS 9.3 devices running Secure Work Space have a device passcode enabled and that the passcode remains enabled at all times.

Users must perform the following actions:

  • Customers that use the Work and Personal – Full Control activation type must enable the Password required for device IT policy which enforces the use of a passcode.
  • Customers that use the Work and Personal – User Privacy activation type must take additional steps to ensure that end users enable a passcode, such as:
    • Inform end users of the need for a device passcode that must be enabled on their iOS devices at all times. End users can manually enable a device passcode on their iOS devices. For more information, refer to the instructions in this Apple support article.
    • Switch an end user’s activation type to Work and Personal – Full Control and enforce the Password required for device IT policy

Users should not upgrade to iOS 9.3 until the Secure Work Space apps have been updated to be compatible with iOS 9.3 and each iOS device that runs Secure Work Space has a device passcode enabled.

The following apps need to be updated so that they are compatible with iOS 9.3:

  • Work Connect for BES12 – The required updates to achieve iOS 9.3 compatibility are not yet available.
  • Work Browser for BES12 – The required updates to achieve iOS 9.3 compatibility are not yet available.
  • WatchDox for Sector – The required updates to achieve iOS 9.3 compatibility are not yet available.
  • Work Security ID for BES12 – The required updates to achieve iOS 9.3 compatibility are not yet available.
  • Documents to Go for BES12 – The required updates to achieve iOS 9.3 compatibility are not yet available.

Users who use custom/in-house Secure Work Space apps will have to re-wrap them to ensure compatibility with iOS 9.3.
