When Punkt launched the MP02, back in September of last year, it was inevitable that the first release would bring with it some software bugs on the handset. Fortunately, the company has now released the first update of the MP02’s firmware and it is now available to install over the air.
Due to the fact that the Punkt MP02 is secured by BlackBerry, the upgrade has been examined and approved by BlackBerry, a necessary requirement before official release.
The biggest issue in the initial release was a bug that severely affected the MP02’s battery life. The issue occurred in messaging, while inputting text letters the MP02 could suddenly switch out of Message Composer and into Call when you digit the last letters into a text message. This was a quick and subtle transition which could easily be mistaken for a user error, but it was a glitch and it impacted the phone’s battery power.
It was unusual that this should reoccur, however once it happened battery power continued to drain as the bug stopped the phone from going into standby mode.
This was a major issue and users will be pleased to know that the first software update brings a stability increase in the message feature crash occurring in random text input. There has also been a moderate improvement in battery life issues and Punkt highlight that is a priority issue for all future software updates.
Another Text messaging bug has been resolved and the New message contact in New Message Shortcut now correctly displays the message recipient’s name. It is also now possible to use the ‘use content’ option to save the contact information of a text message sender to Contacts.
The Note reminder notification that remained on even when the phone was in standby has been fixed and it is now possible to edit “authentication type” in APN network settings. Various bugs related to random speed and call dialling have also been resolved.
A significant amount of UI language corrections have been made in this software release and Punkt highlight that others are still being worked on. Finally, manual setting of date/time in German has been fixed.
Software Release v01.02.0051 also brings some partial fixes. Improvements have been made with the Call History issue which was calling the last person listed instead of the selected contact.
The update brings UI text change in Alarm settings for the majority of supported languages and UI language corrections in most mis‑spelt country names.
In Italian, the tethering on/off switch in the rapid-access Status menu (reached by pressing the Up arrow) has been fixed for connection via Wi-Fi, but not yet for USB and Bluetooth tethering. As a workaround the tethering on/off switch in the Connectivity menu can be used for all tethering connection options (reached by pressing the Punkt button, and then Settings).
Punkt point out that there are a few known issues not fixed in this update:
With this software release we have had to prioritise some issues above others, and there are a significant number of issues that have not been fixed this time round.
We are working towards fixing these with the next MP02 software update.
• Silent mode not staying on
• Notification screen not displaying received notifications
• Tethering password auto-resetting
• Vibration function not working
• User-defined dictionary and predictive text issues

How to update the Punkt MP 02
The Punkt MP 02 firmware is installed over the air but you must be on a WiFi connection in order to connect to Punkt’s firmware servers. You should also ensure the MP02 has at least a 50% charge. It is also recommended that you connect the device to a wall charger before proceeding.
• Press the Punkt key.
• Scroll down to and select Settings.
• Scroll down to and select About.
• Scroll down to and select Firmware.
• Scroll to and select Check for update.
If an update is available, the MP02 will now start downloading and installing the new software. Users should note that the MP 02 may appear to be switched off, for several minutes. Do not try and switch it on until the firmware update is completed.
