Punkt launched the MP02, back in September of last year, and the company has finally released the third update of the MP02’s firmware. Firmware v1.6 brings the following numbers: EU.01.06.0069 for Version 1 (EU, GB, JP and AU) and US.01.06.0069 for Version 2 (USA/Can).
It should also be pointed out that Version 1.6 requires the MP02 to have already been updated to version 1.5 (EU.01.05.0065 for Version 1 and US.01.05.0065 for Version 2).
After lengthy independent testing, v1.6 now provides compatibility with USA mobile service providers AT&T and Cricket (with VoLTE) and T-Mobile (without VoLTE). That’s the only new feature as Firmware v1.6 concentrates on fixing a lot of bugs.
MP02 v1.6 Fixes
One main bone of contention with the MP02 was battery life. v1.6 brings significant improvements and there will be more coming.
When texting ,random letter duplication during text input no longer occurs and the occasional screen freeze after sending a message has been solved. The ‘new message’ notification is now correctly displayed on the Home Screen when the keypad is unlocked and the aural notification for received text messages now works properly
There have been improvements to calling in this update. When a call is on mute, the unmute option is now available in the Call Options contextual menu (Down arrow) and a a call can now be put on hold by pressing the Call key. Users will be delighted to hear that the bug that caused the first number from Call History to be dialled instead of the desired contact is now finally fixed.
Silencing the MP 02 has seen some improvements. Silent mode now stays on when selected and no longer affects vibration alert settings. There have been several improvements when flipping the phone to silence it. The ringtone and silent mode are no longer deactivated when the phone is righted, and vibration alert is deactivated when the phone is inverted (face down).
v1.6 brings several improvements to timers. Timer audio signal and Note reminder alarms now sound for one minute and the audio signal now sounds when Silent mode is activated. The audio signal now sounds when the keypad is locked and elapsed time is now retained when countdown has finished, instead of resetting to 00:00:00.
When tethering, the instabilities that regularly occurred after reboot have been solved. Keypad unlock now occurs promptly and a Bluetooth bug that prevented completion of the pairing process with some devices is now fixed.
Finally, for those who rely on the calculator, cursor positioning is now functioning correctly, Clock inaccuracies on Keypad Locked screen/Home screen no longer occur and there are a number of other minor bug fixes.
Punkt point out that there are a few known issues not fixed in this update.
While some issues related to secondary functions of the Call key are now fixed, a few remain which will be resolved in the next update.
After certain text input, pressing the Punkt key enters a new line instead of displaying the contextual menu (like the Enter key on a keyboard). For consistency, Punkt will be removing this. In the meantime, the contextual menu can be displayed by pressing the Punkt key twice
In some circumstances, silent mode can become deactivated after a software update, the automatic date and time setting does not automatically change time format (12/24 hour clock). Finally, customised message templates cannot be sent when receiving, or during, a call.
How to connect the Punkt MP 02 to WiFi
- Unlock the phone.
- Press the Punkt key to access the main menu.
- Scroll to Settings and press the Punkt key again.
- Select and press Connectivity.
- Scroll down to and select Wi-Fi.
- Connect to an available network.
- Press the End key to return to the home page.
How to update the Punkt MP 02
The Punkt MP 02 firmware is installed over the air but you must be on a WiFi connection in order to connect to Punkt’s firmware servers. You should also ensure the MP02 has at least a 50% charge. It is also recommended that you connect the device to a wall charger before proceeding.
- Press the Punkt key.
- Scroll down to and select Settings.
- Scroll down to and select About.
- Scroll down to and select Firmware.
- Scroll to and select Check for update.
If an update is available, the MP02 will now start downloading and installing the new software. Users should note that the MP 02 may appear to be switched off, for several minutes. Do not try and switch it on until the firmware update is completed.
