Samsung has released the Galaxy S10 5G in South Korea, the world’s first available smartphone with built-in fifth-generation communications technology.
On Wednesday the South became the first country to commercially launch nationwide 5G services, with three superfast networks going live offering data speeds that allow users to download entire movies in less than a second.
South Korea’s three mobile carriers, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, held launch events across Seoul for the Galaxy S10 5G. The 256 gigabyte model costs 1.39 million won (£938 / $1,222) and the 512 GB version is priced at 1.55 million won (£1,045 / $1,361).
Interactive virtual-reality displays and robot demonstrations were on show to tout the capabilities of the latest iteration of mobile internet speed, and new users were excited about the possibilities, especially live streaming of sports games and university lectures.
Samsung claims that it is one of the handful of companies with an end-to-end 5G solution from chipsets, network core, radio solutions and user devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G shares a similar hardware with the Galaxy S10+ with significant difference in battery and minute variance in display. It sports a giant 6.7-inch display compared to the Galaxy S10 Plus’ 6.4-inch panel, however, the Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED display with HDR10+ is the same with two cameras sitting in the pill-shaped cut-out on the top right corner.
Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform integrated with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem.
The modem is expected to draw more power, hence the company has packed a 4,500mAh battery that can be fast-charged with the bundled 25W fast charger. The phone also supports wireless and reverse wireless charging tech.
In the camera department, the Galaxy S10 5G has a setup similar to the one on the Galaxy S10 Plus but it adds a 3D ToF sensor on the back that allows “Video Live Focus” and a “Quick Measure” app.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G has a 12MP primary camera and a dual aperture mechanism going between f/1.5 and f/2.4. There is a 16MP ultra-wide camera with an aperture of f/2.2 and the third camera sports a telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.4 along with OIS and PDAF. On the front is a primary 10MP shooter with an aperture of f/1.9 and dual pixel AF. The secondary 8MP shooter is to aid in depth information.
