Huawei unveiled the Huawei Watch GT 2 back in September, coming in 46mm series and 42mm series offerings. However, one of the most disappointing aspects of the smartwatch was the lack of NFC outside of China models.
However, the company has started rolling out firmware update v1.0.2.28 to the smartwatch and the update enables NFC. If you’re confused, it would appear that NFC was built into the Huawei Watch GT 2, omitted from the global specs, and for some strange reason disabled at software level.
Unfortunately, Huawei’s implementation of NFC is limited. To use the NFC feature on the global variant of Huawei Watch GT 2, you have to use the newly introduced OneHop app, which allows the user to connect two Huawei devices via NFC. In addition, your Huawei smartphone must be running EMUI 10.0+.
What this basically means is that, for the moment, users still won’t be able to use the Watch GT 2 to make contactless payments. The fact that the Watch GT 2 is now NFC enabled may make that possible in future updates.
Aside from enabling NFC, Huawei Watch GT 2 firmware update v1.0.2.28 introduces the above mentioned OneHop. If your Huawei smartphone is running EMUI 10.0+, you will be able to customise your own watchfaces.
In addition, Huawei Watch GT 2 firmware update v1.0.2.28 adds quick pairing for FreeBuds 3 and adds sound settings for incoming calls or notification alerts.
Huawei Watch GT 2 firmware update v1.0.2.28 also optimises the sensitivity for the wake-up feature, improves the accuracy of the heart rate monitoring during workouts, fixes a small display issue for resting heart rate and finally, makes updating faster.
The update is reportedly rolling out in US, Germany & the Philippines and is expected to arrive in other regions, including the UK, imminently.
