Telekom Malaysia and Huawei strike 5G partnership

Telekom Malaysia and Huawei have agreed to cooperate in accelerating 5G commercialisation in Malaysia. Under the terms of the agreement, Telekom Malaysia and Huawei will explore a working mechanism covering spectrum, business case, ecosystem and key technologies.

This would include collaborating for a joint study on 5G spectrum and its evolution; joint development of new services concepts and business case of selected 5G use cases which include fixed wireless access, smart cities and vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X); joint study in the areas of 5G ecosystem innovation; and cooperation on a full-fledged 5G system.

Also under the same deal, Telekom Malaysia and Huawei will launch a joint working group to identify areas of copper line services using FWA technology and services.

Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier said that Malaysia will use Huawei’s products and services “as much as possible”.

“Huawei’s research is far bigger than Malaysia’s capability. We will make use of their technology as much as possible”,

Mahathir also said he was not concerned over allegations of espionage activities, which led to the US ban on doing business with the company.
