Amazon Web Services (AWS) is to open a second infrastructure region in Australia in the second half of 2022. The new AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region, which will consist of three Availability Zones (AZs) at launch, will join the existing 25 Availability Zones in eight AWS Regions across Asia Pacific in Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.
SliceTech and BlackBerry
Sliced Tech has partnered with BlackBerry in Australia to host its secure communications portfolio, SecuSuite for Government. The partnership allows BlackBerry to offer a locally-hosted managed service to Australian government agencies and address data sovereignty concerns.
Facebook
Australia is drafting a new regulation that Facebook says misunderstands the dynamics of the internet and will do damage to the very news organisations the government is trying to protect. In response, Facebook has said Australian users will no longer be able to post news stories on its platforms in protest of proposed media bargaining legislation.
Canberra Raiders
Huawei has quit its major sponsorship of rugby league club the Canberra Raiders in Australia, decrying the "continued negative business environment" towards the company in the country. The company, which sponsored the Raiders for almost a decade, signed a new two-year deal to be the main sponsor of the club last year, but will end the deal one year early at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
