AT&T NumberSync will let you use one phone number across connected devices

AT&T has announced a new service called NumberSync which will allow customers to attach a single phone number to all of their connected devices.

AT&T customers will be able to send and receive messages, make phone calls and more from any phone, tablet or wearable device, all using the same primary number.

“This means in the future you’ll be able to send and receive texts, as well as make and receive calls, from your tablet or wearable using the same number that your family, friends and colleagues recognize.

This will work when your smartphone isn’t with you, nearby or even powered on.”

In the future, NumberSync will allow devices to have additional levels of mobile freedom:

  • You will no longer need a fitness band and your smartphone to stay connected when you go for a run.
  • Forget your phone on the way to the store? You won’t have to turn around to be able to ask your spouse if eggs should be on your list.
  • Stay connected with your friends on the soccer field on Saturday afternoon even if your phone is in the car.
  • And you can text your boss from across campus when your phone is sitting on your desk and she will know it is you.

There’s no additional charge for this service. If you have four connected devices on an AT&T plan, you can give them all the same phone number without paying a penny more than what you’re currently paying.

Full details on compatibility aren’t available just yet, but we know that Android and iOS hardware will be supported, you’ll need a VoLTE-compatible phone, and that NumberSync won’t require its own app – instead it will find support from the native messaging systems on all these models.
