Pebble Pledges $1million for SmartStrap Developers

Pebble launched the Pebble Time Kickstarter just over three weeks ago and, at the time of writing, has raised in excess of $19 million. The campaign still has eight days to go before it concludes and is already the most funded Kickstarter project ever.

Arguably, one of the most exciting features is support for interchangeable ‘smartstraps’ that interface with the watch for extra functionality.

Having released the Pebble Time Developers SDK Preview, Pebble announced today that they are pledging 1 million US dollars to encourage the development and commercialization of smartstrap projects for Pebble devices.

If you have an idea and want to be part of the smartstrap revolution, this is your chance! Get a team together, build a prototype and put your project up on a crowdfunding platform. Our team will work to help bring your idea to life.

The company says interest from developers and established brands has been strong but it wants to help by personally backing the best smart strap ideas.

“Not every single project will get funding from Pebble; we’ll use our best judgment to support the most promising and innovative projects,” the company explained in an update to the Pebble Time campaign.

“We will determine the level of our support on a case-by-case basis, and may reach out with other kinds of support, such as promoting some smartstrap projects through Kickstarter updates, on our website getpebble.com, and elsewhere.”

Pebble says it will monitor Kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms for smartstrap projects and back its favourite ones.
