Scotland’s first Zero Bills homes launch in Dundee

57 homes delivered with Discovery Homes mark country’s first Zero Bills site

Octopus Energy has brought its Zero Bills tariff to Scotland, launching the country’s first eligible homes where householders won’t have to pay a penny for their home energy bills for at least 10 years.

All 57 properties at the Tranent Grove development in North Dundee with Discovery Homes will be eligible for Octopus Energy’s Zero Bills tariff as an optional upgrade for homebuyers, marking the first Zero Bills site north of the border.

Launched in 2022, Zero Bills allows customers to move into homes packed with cutting-edge green tech – including a heat pump, battery and solar panels – with no home energy bills for at least 5-10 years, guaranteed.

The news comes hot on the heels of Octopus Zero Bills’ recent launch in France, which marked the fourth country to join the global Zero Bills movement, after the UK, Germany and New Zealand.

So far, Octopus Energy has approved Zero Bills eligibility for over 5,000 homes through partnerships with leading developers, covering affordable and private rent, plus private and shared ownership properties.

Octopus aims to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030.

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director, Octopus Energy, said:

“Scotland is a renewable energy powerhouse – making it the perfect next spot for us to roll out Zero Bills homes.

“By working with leading developers like Discovery Homes, we’re shaking up the future of housing, bringing the reality of no home energy bills to the people of Scotland.”

A Zero Bills home is a regular house with good insulation to make it energy-efficient, and it’s then fitted with solar panels, a heat pump, and a home battery.

These technologies work together to power the home, and the tech platform, Kraken, manages it all to make sure the energy is used in the smartest way possible.

When the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, the home can store clean, cheap energy in the battery. Later, when demand on the grid is high, that energy can be used in the home or even sold back to the grid.

Residents do not pay a penny for the energy their home uses and there are no standing charges, for at least 5 (but usually 10) years. There is a generous fair use allowance, which is the amount of energy usage included in the guarantee (set at roughly double the average household usage).

Grant White, Director, Discovery Homes, said:

“At Discovery Homes, our mission has always been to build properties that don’t just meet today’s standards but anticipate the needs of the future.

“Partnering with Octopus Energy to deliver Scotland’s first Zero Bills homes at Tranent Grove is a proud milestone for us.

“By integrating cutting-edge green technology with our high-quality builds, we are offering our owners long-term financial peace of mind and a sustainable lifestyle that was once a pipe dream. This is the new gold standard for Scottish housing.”
