TalkTalk to offer customers free upgrade after hack

TalkTalk is offering all its customers a free upgrade to compensate for the recent cyber attack, in which thousands of people’s personal data was leaked online.

The upgrade will depend upon the service customers already have and the offer will be available form December 1 until December 31.

However, TalkTalk said it would only waive termination fees for customers wanting to end their contracts, if money is stolen from them as a result of the hack but has promised to do more in future to protect its systems in an effort to regain customer trust.

In a statement the company said:

“We would like to apologise for the unavoidable uncertainty over the last few weeks, whilst we have been working hard to understand the extent of the data accessed during our recent cyber attack.

“As a thank you for your continued understanding, we want to offer all of our customers the choice of a free upgrade, with no additional commitments.”

On its dedicated upgrade page, the company lists four options: there’s free TV content, which includes movies, kids entertainment and sport; a mobile SIM, with a monthly allowance of free texts, data and calls; Unlimited UK landline and mobile calls and a broadband health check from TalkTalk engineers.

Whatever their choice, the package will be bolted on to customers’ existing services without extending the current contract.

At the same time, TalkTalk announced the cyber attack could cost it an estimated £35million in lost of sales and services but the group said significantly fewer customers were affected by the hack than initially feared.

Hackers attacked the TalkTalk website on October 21, the third data breach affecting the company in just a year, and accessed the personal details of almost 160,000 customers. The bank details of 15,600 were stolen.

Police have arrested three teenagers and a 20-year-old boy.
