[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We reported Wednesday how one of the many features and enhancements of the new BBM Enterprise 1.2 is the implementation of Multiple points of presence (MPOP). This allows users to access their BBM Enterprise account from up to three devices simultaneously.
In this configuration, the messages that a user sends and receives are synchronized across the user’s active devices. Incoming invitation requests and voice and video call notifications are displayed on all active devices.
After a user has set up BBM Enterprise version 1.2, or later, on one device, they can add up to two more devices to their BBM Enterprise account. One will be a primary device while the others will be classed as secondary. Users should really decide which is which before beginning and ensure that the first device they activate with BBM Enterprise version 1.2, or later, is with them before adding the primary device.
Obviously, all devices that are added to the BBM Enterprise account should be running BBM Enterprise version 1.2 or later.
Adding devices to a BBM Enterprise account
Download BBM Enterprise to another device and sign in. Tap Start. On the first device, type the synchronization code that is displayed on the new device. Tap Authorize. Optionally, edit the Name and Description for the new device. Tap Continue. Use BBM Enterprise as usual.
Set a primary device for a BBM Enterprise account
The device that a user designates as the primary device for their BBM Enterprise account can communicate to users that use BBM, BBM Protected or versions of BBM Enterprise earlier than version 1.1.
Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines). Tap your name to display the My Profile screen. Tap the icon beside the name of a device. Tap Set as primary device.
Remove a device from a BBM Enterprise account
Users can easily remove a device that was previously designated as the primary device for their BBM Enterprise account:
Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines). Tap your name to display the My Profile screen. Tap the icon beside the name of a device. Tap Deactivate device. Tap Yes.
BBM Enterprise account synchonisation
Security is paramount in BBM Enterprise and one of the reasons that primary and secondary devices have been implemented. There has to some form of control structure and assigning a primary device ensures that secondary devices cannot override settings, etc.
The following information appears only on a user’s primary BBM Enterprise device:
- Settings
- Chat hidden status
- Feed updates
- Draft messages
- Timed message read status
The following information is synchronized across all active devices:
- Display name
- Status
- Avatar
- Contact list
- Deleted messages
- Retracted messages
It should also be pointed out that users will be able to access their BBM Enterprise account from Windows or macOS devices, as well as Android and iOS.

BBM Enterprise uses a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library, allowing for an enterprise grade layer of encryption. Messages, attachments, voice and video calls between users on BBM Enterprise are encrypted using a PGP like model. The sender and the recipient have unique public/ private encryption and signing keys. These keys are generated on the device, by the FIPS 140-2 certified cryptographic library, and are held by the enterprise. BBM Enterprise and Blackberry are not involved in the brokering of the key exchanges, and (unlike other solutions) no servers are involved in managing or storing users’ keys. Furthermore, each message uses a new random symmetric key for message encryption. Additionally, each voice and video call also utilizes a new random symmetric key for each call direction.
BBM Enterprise can provide end-to-end encryption for messages, voice calls, and video calls that are sent between BBM Enterprise users in your organization and other BBM Enterprise users, inside or outside of your organization. If your organization doesn’t use Protected Plus, default BBM encryption is used for messages that you exchange with contacts using BBM. Protected Plus can provide end-to-end encryption for all BBM chats, BBM voice calls, and BBM video calls that are sent or received by BBM Enterprise users in your organization, even if the recipient is not a BBM Enterprise user.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
