HSBC customers will be unable to use the new Apple Pay system as it launches Tuesday in the UK.
HSBC had been expected to be amongst the first to offer the system, which allows some iPhone users and to pay by touching their phone or watch on contact pads.
HSBC said it was planning to launch the service by the end of July.
An HSBC spokesperson stated:
“We are working hard to bring this to our customers by the end of July.”
Customers of First Direct – an HSBC subsidiary – will also have to wait.
HSBC denied that its decision not to participate at launch was last minute, saying that it had not planned to take part.
However, the bank was listed on the Apple website as a “participating bank” as late as Monday and on Tuesday, it was listed as “coming soon”.
