Huawei unveils Nova 5 Pro, Nova 5 and Nova 5i

Huawei unveiled three new phones at a launch event in China today, all part of the Nova line. Huawei detailed the specs of the new devices at the event but didn’t really mention much about the software powering the devices.

The new Nova 5 Pro is the flagship device out of the three — it has a huge 6.39-inch OLED display, a 32MP camera for selfies, and a 4-camera setup on the back. The 4-camera setup consists of a 48MP main shooter, a 2MP depth sensor, a 2MP macro camera, and a 16MP wide-angle camera.

It’s also powered by the Kirin 980 chipset, with 8 gigs of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage.

All of this is powered by a 4,000 mAh battery which supports Huawei’s fast-charging tech. The device starts at around CNY2,999, and will be available on June 28.

And then there’s the regular Nova 5 — it comes with Huawei’s new Kirin 810 chipset, and that’s really the main difference between the Nova 5 Pro and the regular Nova 5. The new Kirin 810 chipset comes with two Cortex-A76 powerful cores clocked at 2.27GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.88GHz and a Mali-G52 MP6 GPU.

The device will be available for purchase in July, starting at CNY2,799. Huawei is only making one variant of the device that comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage, unlike the slightly more powerful Nova 5 Pro.

Finally, there’s the lower end Nova 5i. It comes with a slightly different notch design on the display, the Kirin 710 processor,  a 4-camera setup on the back (24MP main camera, 8MP wide-angle camera, 2MP depth and 2MP macro cameras).

The device comes with the same battery capacity as the other Nova 5 devices, but for RAM and memory you get up to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The device starts at CNY1,999 for the 6GB RAM variant.

The new Nova 5 and Nova 5 Pro are are essentially the same device, with different SoC options: The Nova 5 in particular is the first phone to now introduce the new Kirin 810 chipset.

The new chip features a combination of 2x Cortex A76 CPUs at up to 2.23GHz and 6x Cortex A55’s at 1.88GHz. In terms of GPU, Huawei has opted for a Mali-G52MP6 running at 820MHz.

The Nova 5 Pro comes with the well-known Kirin 980 chipset, which has been powered Huawei and Honor high-end devices since last autumn.

The key feature of the new Nova 5’s is that they’re Huawei’s first OLED devices at this price range. The phones come with a 6.39” panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 (19.5:9 aspect ratio). The phones also sport an under-screen optical fingerprint scanner.

In terms of overall design, it’s a very familiar look, and sports the modern bezel-less design with a teardrop camera notch. This camera is a 32MP unit with an f/2.0 aperture, the same we saw on the Honor 20 & Pro.

The phone is also characterised by a relatively slim design coming in at only 7.33mm. The 171g phone still manages to sport a 3500mAh (typical) battery.

In the camera department, the phone is well equipped and seems to feature the same Sony IMX586 sensor introduced in the Honor View20 and sported in the Honor 20 series. The 48MP sensor comes with an f/1.8 lens, and it seems that it does lack OIS as Huawei doesn’t mention it in the specifications.

The second camera module is a 16MP f/2.2 lens, again, something we saw in the smaller P30 and also in the Honor 20.

Huawei features two further modules: A 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.

Finally, the phone has no headphone jack, but Huawei provides the accompanying adaptor along with headphones in the box.
