Motorola held a virtual launch event today, jumping back into the flagship smartphone scene with the Motorola Edge+ and Motorola Edge.
Both phones come with a curved display with hole-punch design and triple rear cameras. Motorola has equipped the phones with dual stereo speakers tuned by Waves and has also added a host of new customisations and edge screen features to the phones’ Android 10 interface.Â
Motorola Edge+ features a 6.7″ OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution, Snapdragon 865 processor, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, 256GB UFS 3.0 storage, 5000mAh battery with fast wired (18W) and wireless (15W) charging, triple rear camera setup on the back, 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, fingerprint reader, Bluetooth 5.1, and Android 10.
The triple rear camera is made-up of 108MP main (binning to 27MP, f1.8, OIS), 16MP ultra-wide (f2.2, 117-degree FOV), and 8MP telephoto (f2.4, OIS) lenses. It can shoot up to 6K and 4K video at 30fps, as well as slow motion 1080p at 120fps. The front camera is a 25MP shooter.
Motorola Edge and Motorola Edge+ run stock Android 10, with a few add-ons. First, Motorola has tried to make the near 90-degree curve somewhat functional. Users can swipe up or down on the edge to check notifications or quickly switch apps. The edge also shows battery charging status and notifications for incoming calls, messages, and alarms.
The curved portion of the edge shows two customisable buttons at the top and bottom that can be used as triggers while gaming in landscape mode.
Motorola is also introducing a My UX hub in the Moto app that allows users to customise fonts, colours, icon shapes, and fingerprint sensor animations. One can also create a custom theme that reflects even inside the notification drawer.
Another feature that the company is touting for the Motorola Edge series phones is the Waves-tuned dual stereo speakers. Motorola says the Waves MaxxAudio Mobile suite will provide a superior audio output on the two phones.
In the US the Motorola Edge+ will be exclusive to Verzion and will go on sale on May 14 in Smokey Sangria, Thunder Grey. It will cost $1,000 or you can sign up for $41.66 a month installments for two years
The global version will be available in May for €1,199. However, at the time of publishing, there is a question mark whether the Motorola Edge+ will see the light of day in the UK.
