BT has announced that it will launch 5G mobile network services in 20 towns and cities across the UK this Friday (October 11). They include Cardiff, Birmingham, Belfast, Bristol, Coventry, Leicester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle.
The company also committed to scale up its 5G launch to reach 45 towns and cities by the end of the year.
Speaking to journalists at the company’s head offices in London on Monday, BT’s CEO for the Consumer Division, Marc Allera, said that the launch was the logical next step for BT after EE became the first operator to launch 5G in the UK.
“We are really excited to be announcing that 5G will be available to our BT customers so soon after we became the first operator in the UK to launch 5G through EE.
We’ll be launching 5G for BT customers this Friday in 20 large towns and cities across the UK, including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, Leicester, London, and Manchester. We have 5G in more places than any other operator in the UK,” he said.
“We will deliver 5G to a further 25 towns and cities by the end of the year. This means that BT customers will be some of the first in the UK to connect to 5G.”
BT is yet to reveal which 5G phones it will be offering, and how much it will cost customers for a 5G plan bu the company EE, which was the first UK mobile operator to launch a 5G network, back in May and currently offers the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, Oppo Reno 5G and LG V50 ThinQ.
BT will be linking up its broadband and mobile services into BT Halo. Halo customers will get unlimited data and calls on both their phone and at home, while also getting themselves support from a new team of Home Tech Experts and early offers to upgrade to the 5G network. Anyone who has already signed up for BT’s 5G or existing Plus services will get an automatic upgrade to Halo in November.
BT’s 5G service will utilise EE’s 5G network, and it’s important to note that this doesn’t cover the entirety of the cities in which it is available. Instead, 5G is available in specific areas, and you’ll have to be in the immediate vicinity of them in order to access 5G speeds.
BT will launch 5G services for consumer and enterprise customers on Friday.
