Nokia has been ranked as number one in 5G patents by an independent third party. In its study on Standard Essential Patents (published April 2021), independent analyst firm PA Consulting concluded that Nokia is number one for ownership of granted patents that the researchers found essential to 5G standards.

MobileIron has agreed to drop both patent infringement and extortion claims it levelled against BlackBerry. In a four page joint filing, BlackBerry and MobileIron asked Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero to end MobileIron's case, which it filed against BlackBerry in April.

BlackBerry has hired Brian Yearwood as a new director of licensing. Yearwood will be responsible for patent licensing matters and the settlement of patent litigation through licensing. He will provide business/financial advice and preliminary damages analysis for patent litigation matters– delivered to the litigation team and plaintiff/client and work with external damages experts to prepare damages report for litigation matters.

The UK Supreme Court today unanimously dismissed appeals by China’s Huawei and ZTE in patent disputes over mobile data technology with Unwired Planet International and Conversant Wireless. It is the first time that a UK court has issued a decision on what constitutes a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) commitment to licence standard-essential patents (SEPs).
Huawei
Huawei has filed a patent for smartphones with an under-display selfie camera. The tech giant filed two patents back in 2019 that has finally been published by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office).
HTC
HTC has suspended the sale of its smartphones in the UK, as part of an ongoing patent dispute. Non-practising entity IPCom claimed that, as a result of its claim of patent infringement, HTC had indicated it would suspend the sale and importation of the recently launched Desire 12 handset to the UK market, in addition to taking steps to stop sales of all of its mobile devices in the UK.
Qualcomm
A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California has found that Apple iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X infringe two Qualcomm patents, U.S. Patent No. 8,838,949, and U.S. Patent No. 9,535,490, and Apple iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X infringe Qualcomm's U.S. Patent No. 8,633,936.

Back in March 2018, BlackBerry sued Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp over messaging patents. Within months, Facebook counter-sued BlackBerry for similar reasons. Both cases are still in litigation, but BlackBerry has now filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Twitter.

BlackBerry has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Snap Inc. SImilar to the companies lawsuit against Facebook last month, BlackBerry says that Snap has infringed on intellectual property, including innovations on real-time activity location for maps, message notification techniques and methods for integrating advertising on mobile devices.

BlackBerry has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook and its companies WhatsApp and Instagram for their use of instant messaging. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook "created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry's innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features.
