Chengdu Tianfu International Airport
China Mobile has brought Huawei's 5G distributed Massive MIMO solution to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport to build the first Gigabit 5G airport in China. The field tests showed that the user-perceived rate across the check-in areas exceeded 1 Gbps, with the single-user rate increasing by 26% on average over common 5G networks up to a peak of 1.25 Gbps.

Samsung today shared its 5G vision and latest network innovations at “Samsung Networks: Redefined”, a virtual event where the Samsung Networks leadership team presented an overview of Samsung’s notable 5G accomplishments and new solutions driving network transformation.

Samsung today unveiled a new radio designed to help mobile operators overcome the challenges they face in deploying 5G networks. Announced at “Samsung Networks: Redefined,” the new One Antenna Radio features integrated antennas, providing operators with the ability to simplify and speed up 5G installations by consolidating a 3.5GHz Massive MIMO radio with low-band and mid-band passive antennas into a single form factor.
AWS
Amazon has launched AWS Wavelength, an AWS infrastructure that enables enterprises and developers to build ultra-low latency applications that can be delivered via the Vodafone 5G network. Amazon says that by embedding AWS compute and storage services at the edge of 5G networks, “AWS Wavelength enables software developers to serve edge computing use cases like machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and video and game streaming.”
Private 5G
Verizon Business has launched 'On Site 5G', which is the network’s first commercially available, private 5G network solution in the US. Custom-designed and managed by Verizon, On Site 5G networks will allow large enterprise and public sector customers to bring Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband capabilities to indoor or outdoor facilities where high 5G speed, high-capacity, low-latency connectivity is crucial, regardless of whether the premises is within a public 5G Ultra Wideband coverage area.
Lebara
Lebara has extended their MVNO partnership with Vodafone UK, in a new three-and-a-half-year exclusive deal. Lebara Mobile customers will now be able to access Vodafone’s 5G service and customers will continue to be able to use Vodafone’s 4G network, with new features such as 4G Calling being launched this year.
Spirent Communications
Spirent is teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to bring automated 5G testing capabilities to communications service providers (CSPs) building 5G networks on AWS. Spirent’s market-first Landslide 5GC Automation Package is designed to help carriers to rapidly deploy 5G networks on AWS, significantly reducing operational costs, time and resources, compared to manual testing.
Nokia
EE is deploying Nokia’s Self-Organizing Network (SON) software solution to enhance network reliability and service in its 4G and 5G networks, as part of a new vendor deal. With Nokia SON, EE can overcome network complexity to create flexible solutions that better manage its network, as well as automating operations across diverse eco-systems to minimize and address network issues more cost-efficiently.
Ericsson
Ericsson has launched Ericsson Private 5G, offering secure and simple 4G LTE and 5G Standalone (SA) connectivity primarily targeting – but not limited to – manufacturing, mining and process industry, offshore and power utilities, as well as ports and airports.
Realme 8 5G
Realme 8 5G, the third device in the Realme 8 series, has been launched in the UK as the first phone in the UK to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor. The Realme 8 5G is also now the cheapest 5G phone available in the UK.
Play
Samsung is to conduct 4G and 5G trials in Warsaw, Poland, with mobile operator, Play. The companies will verify the capability and performance of Samsung’s 4G and 5G network solutions in the trial, which will be carried out in Play’s labs and commercial networks, beginning in the current quarter of this year.
Nokia 5G
Nokia has been ranked as number one in 5G patents by an independent third party. In its study on Standard Essential Patents (published April 2021), independent analyst firm PA Consulting concluded that Nokia is number one for ownership of granted patents that the researchers found essential to 5G standards.

BT’s mobile business, EE, has finalised new 5G spectrum holdings following the conclusion of the second, assignment stage of Ofcom’s auction and will start to launch some of the new spectrum into the 5G network immediately. EE won 80MHz overall of the 700MHz and 3.6GHz bands that were on offer in the auction.

Huawei-5G
Sweden has become the latest nation to ban Huawei and ZTE from its 5G network, saying doing otherwise would "harm security". Huawei and ZTE will also have to remove any existing installations by January 1, 2025.

EE has switched on 5G in twelve new UK locations, taking the number of towns and cities with access to the operator’s 5G network to 112. The firm’s new data network is now available in Aberdeen, Aldershot, Barrhead, Blackpool, Castleford, Crawley, Mirfield, Oxford, Porthcawl, Shipley, Stafford and Warwick.
